App store revenue

A fairly straightforward calculation, this, but lots of people asked:

  • In October Apple said it had paid $3bn to developers and in June it said it had paid 2.5bn. So, $500m or so a quarter.
  • That works out at $700m or so gross revenue and $215m or so commission for Apple at 30%.
  • So, annual run-rate of about $2.8bn gross revenue and about $850m commission revenue for Apple.

Apple is giving very rounded numbers, so none of this can be particularly precise.
